2006 Mardi Gras Pictures
Soileau Mardi Gras, Feb. 27, 2006
The photos were taken during the first three stops of the Soileau Mardi Gras run, starting at about 10:30 a.m. In Soileau, the Mardi Gras get to munch on Creole treats at several stops--before the evening gumbo. The man with the leaf blower, shown in one photo, is using the machine to propel dollar bills into the air, giving the children something extra to chase. Chickens were thrown at the same stop. The annual Mardi Gras Dance at the Northwest Community Center in Eunice sponsored by the St. Landry Parish Council on Aging attracted the plus 60 crowd along with visitors of all ages. Wayne and the Same Ol' 2 Step, along with 8-year-old Guyland Ledet, provided the music. Guyland's brother, who played rubboard, is shown being interviewed by TV host Tom Voinche Jr. The King and Queen were Fenderick Manuel and Gilda Soileau.
On the Monday night before Mardi Gras in Mamou, the streets are always full and the clubs are also packed. Courtney Granger and Ray Abshire are shown at Fred's, along with a photo of the dancers inside Fred's in the late afternoon. Brandon Moreau played fiddle with Kyle Huval on accordion for the late afternoon street dance under the traffic light at 6th and Main. By evening, Step Rideau and the Zydeco Outlaws were performing at the other end of 6th Street, and Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, back for the Lundi Gras dance after several years of absence, drew a large, enthusiastic crowd under the traffic light.
Shown are photos of Danny Collet and Jr. Melancon. Collet was on stage in the late afternoon, followed in the evening by Jr. Melancon.
